Every time a tourist sets foot in Seville is concerned about seeing the great monuments like the Real Alcazar or the Giralda and, hey! it seems normal to us, but it’s a shame that people get carried away by the most touristy and miss some of our historical gems like the Hospital de la Caridad, a place whose walls were witnesses of the plague epidemic that devastated Seville.

You have probably passed many times in front of this baroque building and its facade has caught your attention, but you didn’t know anything else about its history. From now on this is going to change when you know these 7 facts about the Hospital de la Caridad:

The Brotherhood of the Holy Charity was founded in the mid-fifteenth century and the first rules of its operation are from 1578. Its functions were to transfer the helpless sick to the hospital, to spiritually assist prisoners who were condemned to death and give them burial, and to provide assistance with the corpses left in their wake by the floods in the Guadalquivir.

The facade of the church is one of the great examples of Sevillian baroque. In the upper sections are the patron saints San Jorge and Santiago and the three theological virtues: Faith, Hope and Charity. In the lower part you can see the sculptures of two holy kings: St. Ferdinand, King of Castile and St. Louis, King of France.

It is a true masterpiece where artists as important as Pedro Roldán (in the sculptural work), Juan Valdés Leal (in the polychromy) and Bernardo Simón de Pineda (in the architecture of the altarpiece) participated.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo painted six paintings on the theme of mercy for the Church of the Hospital de la Caridad in Seville. Did you know that four of them were stolen in 1810 during the War of Independence by Marshal Soult? In addition, they were exhibited by him in his house in Paris until his heirs sold them upon his death.

Finally, it is worth mentioning the Santo Entierro, which forms a central part of the main altarpiece of the church. One of the main artistic works of the Church of the Hospital de la Santa Caridad is this beautiful sculptural ensemble. It was the work of the important baroque sculptor Pedro Roldán. Its expressiveness is incapable of leaving anyone who approaches it indifferent. In it, pain and shock go hand in hand. It is capable of provoking the deepest emotion in every believer who contemplates it. And even those who are only capable of admiring it as a great artistic work.
