The museum contains a collection of more than 4,500 works focusing on contemporary and modern Irish and international art from the 1940s to the present day. The museum’s permanent collection comprises more than 1,500 works including photographic works, videos, paintings and sculptures.

The buildings are built around a large central courtyard where retired soldiers’ quarters were located, and in 1991 the former residential rooms became home to the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

El Museo Irlandés de Arte Moderno (en irlandés: Áras Nua-Ealaíne na hÉireann), también conocido como IMMA, es la principal institución nacional de Irlanda para la colección y presentación de arte moderno y contemporáneo. Situado en Kilmainham, Dublín, el Museo presenta una amplia variedad de arte en un programa de exposiciones cambiante, que incluye regularmente obras de su propia colección y de su departamento de educación y comunidad. Además, pretende ampliar el acceso al arte y a los artistas a través de sus programas nacionales y de estudio.

El coleccionista de arte irlandés Gordon Lambert se reunió con el Taoiseach Charles J Haughey y «le dijo que si el Estado creaba una galería él donaría su colección»[1] El Museo Irlandés de Arte Moderno fue creado por el Gobierno de Irlanda en 1990. Fue inaugurado oficialmente el 25 de mayo de 1991 por Haughey[2].

El Museo Irlandés de Arte Moderno se encuentra en el Hospital Real de Kilmainham, del siglo XVII. El Hospital Real fue fundado en 1684 por James Butler, duque de Ormonde y virrey de Carlos II, como hogar para los soldados retirados, y continuó con ese uso durante casi 250 años.
